PC gaming has long been the staple of high performance; easily upgradeable components and continuous improvements in technology mean that many gamers prefer PC gaming over console gaming. On the other hand, gaming on portable or portable devices struggles to reach the same level of performance. While progress has been made with the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, they still don’t perform at the same level.
What if there was a way to harness the power of your PC and stream PC games directly to your mobile device? Luckily there is, and setting it up is easier than you might think…
Download NVIDIA GeForce Experience
The first thing you need is NVIDIA GeForce Experience on your computer. Most PCs or laptops with an NVIDIA graphics card have NVIDIA GeForce Experience software preinstalled with purchase. If you have installed a graphics card yourself, or if the software is not pre-installed, you will need to download GeForce experience from the NVIDIA website.
Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the software. You may notice your screen flickering on and off during the installation process as it detects and configures your graphics card.
Check out our GeForce Experience Beginner’s Guide to learn more about the software.
Set up NVIDIA GeForce Experience
Once the software has been installed and launched, navigate to the settings by selecting the Cog-wheel top right of the window. You must first make sure that your device can stream your games through NVIDIA Shield by installing the Functions panel on the right and look for the Ready status under the game stream head.
The Gamestream System Requirements are also available on the NVIDIA website so you can check if you haven’t bought or built your PC yet.
After verifying that your device can stream games through Shield, go to the Shield tab on the left. On the new screen, turn on Gamestream using the toggle at the top of the box. Your device is now ready to stream all games connected to NVIDIA GeForce Experience.
Navigate back to your House in the top left corner to see a list of games associated with NVIDIA GeForce Experience. If there are no games here or if the game you want to play on your mobile device is missing, go back to the settings with the Cog-wheel and select Games and apps. Add all required folders containing your game’s executable files to the Scan location options (if you have games installed in non-default locations) and press the Scan now to find your games.
NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience supports a wide variety of games, but may not recognize every game you want to be able to stream. If there’s a game missing from you House page that the scanner cannot find, you can add them directly for streaming under the Shield tab and add an executable game directly to the Games and apps list.
Download Moonlight on your mobile device
Next, you need to download Moonlight to your mobile device. Moonlight is a free-to-use, open-source application that turns various devices into clients that can connect to NVIDIA Game Stream. Of the Client Downloads drop-down list, select the mobile device you are using and set up the app. Moonlight supports both Android and iOS, as well as a number of other platforms.
Sync Moonlight with NVIDIA GeForce Experience
Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same internet network as your PC to ensure the application is set up correctly the first time.
Open Moonlight on your mobile device and wait for the host device to appear in the list. If it doesn’t appear after a few seconds, you can manually add the host by its IP address. After the host device is added, click the item to pair the devices. Your mobile device connects to the host and provides a PIN to be entered in the SHIELD pop-up on your PC.
Once this PIN is entered, your mobile device will provide you with a list of all games associated with NVIDIA GeForce Experience (or manually added as above), which can be streamed directly to your mobile device.
Set up Internet streaming (optional)
Moonlight is now set up so that you can stream games from your PC to your mobile device while connected to the same internet network. To use your PC on any Internet connection, you need an additional Internet hosting utility on your computer.
Once installed, run the Moonlight Internet Streaming Tester application to make sure it is installed correctly. If everything works as intended, your device is now set up for streaming over the internet. It allows you to play your PC games on your mobile device.
Enjoy PC gaming in the palm of your hand
With the power of NVIDIA and Moonlight, gaming is now accessible anywhere, anytime, even when you’re away from your PC. With a growing market of wearable devices, portable gaming can finally allow the reader to fully compete with both mobile and PC gaming experiences.
