Macs are typically effective and reliable machines that you can use efficiently for years to come. But like any other piece of technology, they can sometimes get clogged with unnecessary (maybe even malicious) files, programs, and processes.
If you’re looking for a way to make your Mac as efficient as you remember, CleanMyMac X might be worth it. But before we dive into its features, let’s quickly discuss what exactly CleanMyMac X is all about.
What is CleanMyMac X?
CleanMyMac X is a third-party utility that you can use to perform various disk cleaning, app management and antivirus functions on your computer. It also tracks your Mac’s battery (if applicable), CPU load, disk or SSD space, and memory.
This software was created in 2010 by MacPaw and has been expanded with many features since its inception. It is arguably one of the most popular cleaning tools out there. CleanMyMac X is on the App Store, which means it has been verified by Apple and is completely safe to download.
Other similar utilities include OnyX, AVG TuneUp, and Smart Mac Care. You can discover more cleaning and optimization apps for your Mac if you look for alternatives.
CleanMyMac X Features
From 2010 to date, CleanMyMac X has compiled features that are now grouped into five main categories: Clean, Protection, Speed, Applications, and Files.
The standout feature, however, is the Smart Scan, which makes it easy to identify and fix problems on your Mac through three paths: cleaning, protection, and speed.
System and browser cleanup
After clicking the smart scan button, CleanMyMac X lets you see which files are fair to throw away in your Mac’s spring clean. We have determined that the main culprit for this utility app is cache files. While you can manually clear system and internet caches, such a cleaning app usually simplifies this process.
Before deleting your caches, see what CleanMyMac may have selected. Caches are not completely useless and can make using certain features on your computer faster. After you click . clicked Rating details in the smart scan section, you can deselect useful cache files. In this case, we’ve left our Apple Music cache so that we can easily stream music when connected to bad Wi-Fi.
Keep in mind that CleanMyMac’s cleaner will also delete system and user logs. So we also disabled the Zoom log folder because we still have important information there.
While this may be useful for the more casual users, people who use information in such logs may find this an inconvenient minus for CleanMyMac X.
MacPaw’s application also extends its file cleaning services to the Mail app and Recycle Bin in macOS.
Like Smart Scan, you can also select what you want CleanMyMac X to permanently delete from the Trash.
Built-in app uninstaller and updater
If you struggle to keep up with your apps, updating and uninstalling them can become a chore for you. In that case, you might love the Applications segment of CleanMyMac X. Why? Because the user interface is better than your Mac’s.
CleanMyMac X offers a segmented and easy-to-view view of all your applications, where you got them from, and a big round button to press to remove them. Apple doesn’t offer all of this as standard on a Mac.
CleanMyMac’s app management even extends to Safari extensions, so you can uninstall them without opening Launchpad or Safari. But if you’re new to Safari, learn how to find, install, and uninstall Safari extensions the standard way.
The updater is also quite useful as it keeps track of your outdated apps and suggests updates. Moreover, you can also use it to update your operating system.
Malware Removal Tool and Menu Bar Window
The anti-malware tool in the “Protection” category is also simple. You can start a quick scan to search your device for suspicious programs. But for some reason, CleanMyMac X needs to install a small “helper” program to do this job.
We found the menu bar window to be another useful feature. You will open a window that tracks your computer in real time if you click on the little monitor icon in the top right corner of the macOS menu bar that represents CleanMyMac X.
Here you can quickly see statistics about your computer, from Wi-Fi speed to disk space. You can also check your Mac’s battery cycle count and health by clicking Battery in this window.
However, keep in mind that the battery status is slightly different from what Apple shows in System Preferences. While we can’t be sure which one is more accurate, you can use caution and track your battery with another source of information.
Is CleanMyMac X Free?
CleanMyMac X is not free, but offers a free trial that will help you to clean 500MB of Recycle Bin files. You can also buy the full application for:
- $89.95 for one Mac
- $179.90 for two Macs
- $449.75 for five Macs
You can also buy the product and ask for a full discount after purchase if you are not satisfied with it.
If you don’t like paying directly, you can save some money and pay for an annual subscription to:
- $39.95 for one Mac
- $79.90 for two Macs
- $199.75 for five Macs
New buyers also have a chance to receive a 25% discount on their first purchase. It may be a good idea to use it for a one-time purchase rather than an annual subscription as you get more bang for your buck.
Know the Pros and Cons of CleanMyMac X
One of the biggest advantages that CleanMyMac X has over its competitors is how easy it is to use and how beautiful the user interface is. With just a few clicks, you’ll get some extra space on your Mac and see a visible improvement in processing speed and overall user experience.
However, the major drawback is that CleanMyMac X can also have too many features than it needs. For example, an email cleaner is hardly useful, as it cannot help to clean thousands of junk emails we had. The same goes for the browser cleaner; you don’t need any third-party software to manage your browser’s privacy, as it’s easier to do that in the browser itself.
The extra features seem like an attempt to justify the price. It also leaves a trail of numerous mini-programs in support of the main program, which can seem a bit messy to you. But whatever mess it creates, this utility app makes up for it with a brilliant user interface, proactive features, and neat item lists.
Should You Use CleanMyMac X?
CleanMyMac X is a great tool worth checking out for yourself, but price is an important factor to consider. The software is more expensive than its competitors but offers real value for money.
If you have the money, it’s best to go for a one-time payment. But if you don’t, you may be able to save more money by opting for an alternative, such as OnyX or CCleaner.
